The Leander school district Air Force Junior ROTC TX-20007 unit and instructors recently received high honors from the Department of the Air Force Air University.

Master Sgt. Edmund Perez was named as a 2013 AFJROTC Outstanding Instructor of the Year. This selection is a culmination of a board review of the Regional Outstanding Instructors and recognizes Perez’s exemplary contributions and positive impact on his cadets, school and community.

In addition, the district’s Major Terry Neidecker received the Outstanding Instructor Award for Region 3. As one of the 112 Outstanding Instructor Award winners, Neidecker represents one of the best of 1,880 AFJROTC instructors.

Perez and Neidecker are teachers with the district’s AFJROTC program, and its TX-20007 unit located at Leander High School was recently honored as a 2013 Distinguished Unit with Merit. This award recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors, and the support of the school and local community. Units receiving this award represent the best of the 867 Air Force Junior ROTC units worldwide.

“We are excited that the students and instructors who are a part of LISD’s Air Force JROTC program have been recognized for their hard work and dedication,” said Camille Clay, district director of career and technical education.

The AFJROTC program provides citizenship training and an aerospace science program for high school students enrolled in ninth through 12th grades. Enrollment in the AFJROTC program is open to all school district students who are willing to wear the Air Force uniform one day each week and are physically fit and United States citizens.
